FOREWORD	Введение
It is absolutely necessary that our officers should be familiar with French military phraseology in order to insure prompt understanding in time of action. It is also essential that as many of the men as possible should acquire a sufficient knowledge of French to enable them to communicate with reference to certain military matters. This book promises to meet the demands of the situation in an admirable manner and will, if mastered, give a practical working knowledge of French military phraseology. INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDY BY THE PHONOGRAPH	Как учиться с помощью фонографа
In using language records, please be guided by the following:	Как лучше пользоваться фонограммами:
Remember that the first time you spoke over a telephone you could not understand a word of the reply.	Вспомните свой первый в жизни разговор по телефону - вы же не могли разобрать ни слòва собеседника!
Remember that you must accustom your ear to the foreign sounds to which you are listening.	Нужно привыкнуть понимать устную иностранную речь.
Read the foreign matter of the first lesson very carefully, paying particular attention to the foot-notes.	Внимательно прочитайте текст первого урока и пояснения.
Put record No. 1 on the phonograph and play it ten times, following in the book the foreign words. Any part of the record can be repeated at any time by lifting the reproducer or Sound box and setting it back to the part, which it is desired to repeat. Then you should play the record ten times, disregarding the foreign words and following the English translation of the words, to which you are listening. Then close the book and listen to the record thirty times, repeating the words after the record. Of course, it is not necessary or even desirable that ail this should be done at one sitting. It should be divided up into four or five or more periods. Follow this practice with all the records, so that your ear may become thoroughly trained. The vocabularies in the Military Manual are not given on the records.	Установите в фонограф валик с фонограммой №1 и прослушайте ее 10 раз, следя по тексту в книге. Всегда можно снова прослушать любой фрагмент фонограммы - просто поднимите звукосниматель и опустите его на начало нужного фрагмента. Затем, прослушайте фонограмму еще 10 раз, следя, на этот раз не по иностранному тексту, а по английскому переводу. Закройте книгу и прослушайте фонограмму еще 30 раз, повторяя слова за диктором. Конечно же, вовсе не обязательно, даже нежелательно, делать всё это за один присест. Растяните это на 4-5 занятий. И так каждую фонограмму, чтобы ваши уши привыкли к иностранной речи. Имеющиеся в печатном учебнике словарики в фонограмме отсутствуют.
You will shortly be surprised how easily and quickly you will gain facility in speaking.	Вскоре вы будете приятно удивлены, как легко и быстро вы научитесь говорить!
Do not fail to repeat the words and sentences aloud after the record. Train your tongue as well as your ear.	Очень важно повторять слова и фразы за диктором. Только так вы научитесь и произношению, и распознаванию чужой речи на слух.
Start speaking the language as soon as you can.	Начинайте общаться на языке при первой же возможности.
Do learn to speak by repeating after the phonograph.	Учитесь говорить, повторяя за фонографом.
Be it noted that for the purpose of acquiring a faultless pronunciation and training the ear so as to be able to understand natives talking among themselves, these records are as valuable for an advanced student as for a beginner. Send us a number of original sentences based on the first lesson. We will return them to you corrected. Continue sending us exercises for correction at frequent intervals. The written exercises should be on the subject of the lesson, which you are studying, that is, these exercises should consist of dialogues based on the lesson, but they must be original, that is, not copied from the book, and in fact they should be written without reference to the book. A good time to write these exercises is right after you have listened for a while to the record.	Предложения в письменных упражнениях должны быть на тему текущего урока, основаны на его диалогах, но не списаны с учебника, а оригинальны. Вы должны сочинить их сами, не глядя в учебник, лучше всего, сразу после прослушивания фонограммы.
